Tour Description
Our journey begins as we depart from the tourist port of Ushuaia, heading towards the heart of the Beagle Channel. As we sail away, we are treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Ushuaia's coastline and the majestic Olivia and Five Brothers mountains.
We chart a course southwest to the Isla de los Lobos, where we can observe sea lions in their natural habitat from the comfort of our boat. Our adventure continues to Bird Island, home to Magellanic and Imperial Cormorants, offering a prime location for spotting various species of marine birds. The furthest point of our voyage is the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, located in the archipelago of the same name. Here, you can glimpse remnants of the Monte Cervantes, a vessel that tragically sank in 1930.
As we follow the southern coastline of the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego, we pass by Estancia Remolino, the resting place of the stranded ship Monte Sarmiento. Crossing the Beagle Channel from north to south, we view the Gable Island and the Puerto Williams Naval Base (situated on Navarino Island, Republic of Chile). Upon reaching Hammer Island, we pause to admire the colony of Magellanic Penguins that nest here during the summer months.
Our return to the local port takes us past the Estancias of Tunnel and Fique, offering one last glimpse of the stunning landscape.

The excursion to the Martillo Island Penguin Colony includes sailing through the Beagle Channel, allowing you to enjoy stunning Patagonian landscapes and spot marine wildlife such as sea lions and various birds. Upon arrival at Martillo Island, you can observe a colony of Magellanic penguins and learn about their habitat and behavior. The total duration of the tour is approximately four hours, making it ideal for those who want to explore the beauty of the End of the World in a comfortable and unhurried manner.
The best time to take a trip to the Martillo Island Penguin Colony is between October and March. During these months, the weather in Ushuaia is milder, and it's nesting season for Magellanic penguins and other species. This is the optimal time to observe penguins in their natural habitat, as there are chicks and you can admire the dynamic between the adults and their chicks. Planning your visit wisely guarantees an unforgettable experience for those who love nature and biodiversity.
During the cruise to Martillo Island, you will have time to observe the penguin colony up close while you remain on the boat. However, disembarking on the island to walk among the penguins is not permitted. This is due to conservation and protection regulations for these species, ensuring minimal impact on their daily lives. Guides provide detailed information about the penguins and their behavior, ensuring an educational and eco-friendly experience during your visit to the Beagle Channel.
To fully enjoy the excursion, it is recommended to wear warm and waterproof clothing, given the changeable weather in the Ushuaia region. It is advisable to bring extra layers of clothing, a hat, gloves, and a scarf to protect yourself from the cold. Don't forget your binoculars to better spot the wildlife and a camera to capture the beauty of the landscape and wildlife. You may also want to bring a light snack and water, although the boat usually offers refreshments on board for your convenience.
The boat trip to the Penguin Colony is child-friendly and generally an enriching family experience. However, it is advisable to carefully consider the duration and weather conditions for children. For guests with reduced mobility, it is recommended to check the boat's accessibility in advance, as some do not have the necessary adaptations.
